  • License Server version 13.012 for CINEMA 4D R13 - R16.

How to install MAXON License Server

Note.: While it is technically possible to run MAXON License Server and CINEMA 4D on the same machine at the same time, we do not recommend it. You should always use separate PC for MAXON License Server..

Important: MAXON License Server acts as a standard Windows application. This means that all configuration changes including list of CINEMA 4D serial numbers are linked to the currently logged in user. So if you install MAXON License Server under your user account and then run this application under different user account, all changes including CINEMA 4D serial numbers will be lost and MAXON License Server will not be able to distribute serial numbers to other computers, because it will not "see" any serial numbers.

Interested in running MAXON License Server as a service? Please read the article here.

  1. Launch installer, install MAXON License Server and start the application.
  2. Open PDF or other electronic document with your serial numbers, select all lines with product names and serial numbers and copy them to the clipboard by pressing CTRL C..
  3. In License Server, click on "Add Serials" button, press CTRL V to paste serial numbers and click OK.
    Licenční server 1
  4. You should now see your serial number(s) in the list including number of licenses:

    Licenční server 2

In the Licenses column you should see number of available licenses and number of maximum licenses you can allocate. If you purchased 50 concurrent licenses, you will see 50/50 (50 available from the total of 50).

Adapt Windows Firewall Settings

By default, MLS uses port 5235 to communicate with CINEMA 4D installations across the network. Please allow this port in the Firewall setting on the PC where MLS is running, otherwise MLS will not be able to receive serial number requests from CINEMA 4D users. If you need to change the port, you can do so in the MLS settings (under File menu). Please note that when you change port number or IP address of the MLS, you need to change respective values in license.ini file on all computers, where CINEMA 4D is installed (see here).

How to run Maxon License Server as a Windows service

Backup

BEFORE YOU START ...

DISCLAIMER: Running MAXON License Server as a service is not officially supported by MAXON. We have tried it and it works for us, but there is no guarantee it will work for you as well. The solution is provided as is and you can use it at your own risk only. We take no responsibility for any problems or even damages it can cause. Before doing any changes, we strongly recommend you backup your current server configuration. With virtual systems, it is just a matter of minutes or even seconds.

Option 1 - running MLS as a service under administrator user account

Required tools: NSSM (free)
Pros: easier changes to MLS settings later on
Cons: if you (or anybody else in your organization) change admin user password used during service installation, you must not forget to reinstall the service using new credentials, otherwise service will fail to launch. If you think this could be a big problem for you, try option 2 (install the service under Local System Account).

  1. Log in to your Windows computer under administrator user account
  2. Install MAXON License Server
  3. Launch Maxon License Server and enter user information and then enter serial numbers by clicking on Add Serials button in MAXON License Server Window.
  4. Download free NSSM tool and install it (in our case, it was installed into C:\nssm\ folder)
  5. Launch Command Prompt (cmd.exe)

  6. In Command Prompt window, switch to your nssm 64bit installation folder by typing
    cd "C:\nssm\win64\"
  7. In Command Prompt window, launch nssm by typing
    nssm install

  8. This will launch NSSM utility, where you need to specify path to you Maxon License Server installation folder (1) and Service name (2)

  9. Do not (!) click the Install service button yet, but go to the Log on tab of NNSM app

and click on This account radio button + add your current admin login credentials (for the account your are actually logged in with).
  10. Then click on Install Service button
  11. In Windows, launch Services application

  12. In the list of services, right click on MAXON License Server and select Start in the context menu (or Stop, if you want to stop the service).
  13. If everything was set up correctly, service should start.
  14. As a last step, you need to allow TCP port 5235 (default MAXON license server port) in your Windows Firewall.

How to change MLS settings after service was created using method described above

  1. Login to Windows under the same user account as was used for creating the service
  2. Stop the service as described in paragraphs 11 and 12
  3. Launch MAXON License Server from Windows
  4. Make necessary changes to MLS setting (e.g. add/remove serial numbers, create groups etc.).
  5. Close MLS.
  6. Start the service.

Option 2 - running MLS as a Windows service under Local System account

Required tools: NSSM and PSEXEC (both tools are free)
Pros: not dependent on user account credentials (if anybody changes admin password, service should continue to run)
Cons: changes to MLS settings more complicated

  1. Log in to your Windows computer under administrator user account
  2. Install MAXON License Server, but do not launch it. If it launches, just close it without entering any serial numbers.
  3. Download free NSSM tool and install it (in our case, it was installed into C:\nssm\ folder)
  4. Download free PSEXEC tool and unzip it (in our case, it was unzipped into C:\PSTools\ folder)
  5. Launch Command Prompt in Windows (cmd.exe)
  6. Make sure that MAXON License Server is not running (!)
  7. In the Command Prompt window, type:
    C:\pstools\PSExec.exe -i -s -d "C:\Program Files\MAXON\MAXON License Server R17\CINEMA 4D License Server.exe"

This will launch MAXON License Server under Local System account instead of user account

  8. Enter Cinema 4D serial numbers into Maxon License Server and close MLS
  9. In the Command Prompt window, switch to your nssm 64bit installation folder by typing
    cd "C:\nssm\win64\"
  10. In the Command Prompt window, launch nssm by typing
    nssm install
  11. This will launch NSSM utility, where you need to specify path to you Maxon License Server installation folder (1) and Service name (2). Before clicking on Install Service (3), please make sure that on Log on tab the "Log on as" option is set to Local System Account (should be there by default). Then you can Click on install Service.

  12. In Windows, launch Services application

  13. In the list of services, right click on MAXON License Server and select Start in the context menu (or Stop, if you want to stop the service).
  14. If everything was set up correctly, service should start.
  15. As a last step, you need to allow TCP port 5235 (default MAXON license server port) in your Windows Firewall.

How to change MLS settings after service was created using method described above

  1. In Windows, launch Services application and Stop the service as described in paragraphs 12 and 13
  2. Launch Command Prompt from Windows
  3. In the Command Prompt window, type:
    C:\pstools\PSExec.exe -i -s -d "C:\Program Files\MAXON\MAXON License Server R17\CINEMA 4D License Server.exe"

This will launch MLS under Local System account instead of your used account

  4. Make necessary changes to MLS setting (e.g. add/remove serial numbers, create groups etc.)
  5. Close MLS.
  6. Start the service.

Troubleshooting

Uninstall / reinstall the service

  1. Login to Windows under administrator user account
  2. In Windows, launch Services application and Stop the service
  3. Launch Command Prompt from Windows
  4. In the Command Prompt window, switch to your nssm 64bit installation folder by typing
    cd "C:\nssm\win64\"
  5. In the Command Prompt window, launch nssm by typing
    nssm remove "MAXON License Server"

Note: replace MAXON License Server with the name of your service
  6. Refresh the list of services in Services window. Important note: it may take couple of minutes before Windows actually removes the service from the list. Keep refreshing the list of services until your service disappears.
